How to Keep your Passwords Safe in 2021
Secure passwords keep your accounts safe. When you do not have the proper safety measures in place for securing your passwords, you are putting your business’ data at risk. In fact, 83 percent of data breaches are due to weak and stolen passwords, according to the Verizon Data Breach Report. So, how can you secure your accounts? It is simple – multi-factor authentication.
Multi-factor authentication, also known as two-factor authentication, requires a user to enter their password AND a generated code to log in to their account. The generated code could be sent to a mobile phone, or it could be found within an application installed on a mobile device that stores the generated codes. The codes are set to expire after a certain amount of time. Once the time is up, a new code is generated.
3 Reasons Why You Should be Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
- Worry less about employees following password best practices. 47 percent of business leaders believe their employees use simple or weak passwords and 31 percent believe their employees reuse their business passwords for their personal accounts.
- Extra protection. According to Microsoft, 99.9 percent of attacks can be blocked with multi-factor authentication.
- Designed for all business sizes. While 61 percent of business leaders believe MFA is designed for larger companies, this is simply not the case. All businesses, big and small, will benefit from having this tool in place.
While multi-factor authentication is a helpful tool to have in place, do not view it as the sole solution to keep accounts 100 percent safe. It is still very important and necessary to be cautious online and be careful where you click.
